Journey Article continued from last page. * We attempt mystical deeds that are beyond our reach in terms of experience and skill, because humble acts of devotion are"for the beginners. Reach beyond the horizon, all the way to the stars, but don't forget that often the simplest pleasures are also spiritually beautiful. There is nothing better than gazing at the sunrise or smelling the fragrance of a rose. Find time for simple, innocent happiness. You'll notice you have grown stronger, richer and more learned. * We look for and dwell on contradictory advice so we won't have to make up our minds or change our lives. Who knows you better than you? Who defines success? Are you afraid to trust? Fearful of being wrong? That's what the fear of success does to you. It makes you distrust yourself and sabotage your own attempts to live spiritually.Give up such petty weakness of heart and arise, said Krishna in Bhagavad Gita. That advice is as applicable today, as it was 5,000 years ago. *
We rarely study books about spiritual life, stubbornly going
our own way.
Yes, it is important to find our own way to express spirituality, but turning to experienced people for advice is not a shame. I have found many books extremely helpful. Bhagavad Gita, The Loving Search for God by William A. Meninger, Science of Self-Realization by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami - all of them have offered valuable guidance to me. Good advice is given to ease your load, not to make life cumbersome. *
We can't get enough ideas on how to live spiritually.
The fear of being successful holds you back. The mind can either be your best friend, or the fiercest enemy. Best thing to do when the mind throws useless thoughts on your path - such as, I can't get any ideas - is to follow the advice given by St. Teresa of Avila. Simply laugh those thoughts off. Don't take them too seriously. The mind is just offering excuses. Look around. Look in the library. Peek into the books I mentioned. Talk to people of various faiths. Play some devotional music. Ideas will come. *
You have so many ideas, you can't choose one.
Such is life. One minute the mind's blank; next time we knock on its door, it's like a beehive. When our daughter was born, we had so many names listed for her, we couldn't choose one. Finally, we wrote each name on a slip of paper, tossed them all in a basket and picked one at random. Who knows, the same method just might work with an abundance of spiritual ideas. At least the girl got a name. Don't
sabotage your precious opportunity to give yourself the best.
You deserve a top-class spiritual program, tailored to your
special, individual needs. You can overcome your fear of success
by listening to that precious second voice that speaks from
your heart. Trust it. You can do it. You can continue to do
it.
