Talking to Heaven with James Van Praagh

Psychic medium James Van Praagh has been a favored guest on TV talk shows like “Oprah,” “Larry King Live,” “20/20,” and “48 Hours.” His many books record his psychic and mediumistic experiences and tell others how to tap into their own abilities. The CBS mini-series based on his life, “Talking to the Dead,” starring Ted Danson, was the highest rated show for CBS in two years. And more recently, his own tv show, “Beyond with James Van Praagh,” had its own unique approach to portraying psychism.

Van Praagh will be presenting a seminar, “Talking to Heaven,” in Atlanta in October. We talked about the latest directions his career has taken.

Kathryn: James, since your show, “Beyond with James Van Praagh,” is still seen in re-runs in the Atlanta market, some readers may be unaware that the show will not return in the fall. Would you explain what happened?

James: Well, the problem we had was that spirituality and Hollywood don't match very well. They [Tribune Entertainment, the show's production company] wanted to do things that I didn't want to do. I have integrity.  My number one thing is integrity, and I didn't want that to be compromised. I thought it would be much better if we didn't continue the show. And also, Tribune Entertainment didn't want to put any publicity  into the show. And the ratings would go, so what was the point? So, that was really the specific reason.
