It Isn't “Woo-Woo” Anymore!

Lois M. Grant, Ph.D.

Twenty years ago when I started meditating in an effort to handle stress, I didn't call it meditation. The word “meditation” had an Eastern ring to it and was regarded by many as somewhat suspect. Maybe even “of the devil.” I was suffering from severe rheumatoid arthritis and desperate for something to do besides poison my body with drugs. At a stress seminar I learned that “the best thing to do for stress is to sit in a chair with your eyes closed for ten minutes twice a day.” I had heard about Dr. Herbert Benson's book The Relaxation Response, which said the same thing and was backed by medical studies, so I started sitting in that chair.

That simple act allowed Spirit to come through and for the first time in my life I began to realize that I didn't have to do some of the things I had been doing in an unsuccessful attempt to please others. I had forced my Higher Self to whack me over the head (and hands and feet and knees and shoulders) with a “chronic and incurable” dis-ease because I had ignored all the other signals they sent me; I couldn't ignore pain and inflammation!

numerology, channeled teachings, and a whole raft of alternative healing modalities. I really enjoyed learning about these new (to me) things, but because they weren't exactly understood and appreciated by some of my friends and family, I called them “w.s.” – short for “weird stuff.” This rather humorous put-down of options that actually seemed to be helping me made it go down a little easier. The more I studied and applied alternative teachings and healings, the better I felt. Diving deep into past life experiences which led to forgiving my mother made a difference in a way that no pharmaceutical drug could. I discovered Louise Hay's list of emotional and spiritual causes of illnesses along with affirmations to retrain my destructive thinking patterns. Chipping away at a centuries-old crust of anger and resentment around my soul took me fifteen years. Finally, in July of 1997 I was victorious when I took my last prescription drug.
