1.  Handkerchief. Every time I blow my nose or sop up a spill, I am saving trees. (Carry extras tucked away.)

2. Water-bottle strap. Empty plastic water-bottles are abundant. My shoulder-strap ensures that I carry life-giving water everywhere. (Switch bottles fairly often; plastic gets old.)

3. Grocery sack. Along with a couple of plastic grocery sacks, I carry an empty bread bag and a used ziplock for bulk items at the coop. (Rolled up tight, secured with rubber bands, they're almost weightless.)

4. Mug, plate, spoon. I carry a frisbee and a spoon in my daypack, and can eat anywhere without accepting disposables. (The mug is for people who like coffee or tea; I'm fine with my jug of water.)

5. Empty yogurt container. Any container that seals will work for takeout or doggiebag. Why settle for styrofoam? (Or spend good money on Tupperware!)

6. Clothing rack. Clothes dry slowly on an outdoor clothesline in Georgia, if at all, because of the humidity. We bought two types of folding indoor clothes-drying racks, one made of wood and one of wire. (Direct sun is fastest, of course.)

7. Ritual. Like a corporation, a ritual is a technology made of human parts. Rather than plugging into a machine, however, in ritual we connect with the natural world that spawned us, playing parts in the drama of cosmos rather than commerce. Instead of telling time by clock and calendar, ritual turns with the stars and seasons.

Ritual is a technology for remembrance, for tuning our heartbeats once more to nature’s, for making sure our children don't forget what their grandparents knew.

When the Autumn Equinox arrives this month, among all her usual accoutrements – her colorful leaves and heaps of pumpkins – people around the planet will form circles in her honor. This autumn, like every autumn, we celebrate the miracle of Harvest, the faithfulness of Nature, our sacred sustenance and its mysterious Source.

In Atlanta, we'll be circling on Wednesday, Sept. 24, from 7:30-9:30 pm, at the Atlanta Friends Meeting (701 W. Howard Ave. in Decatur), co-hosted by Dances of Universal Peace and the Dekalb Interfaith Coalition for Prevention. An inter-faith prayer and dance circle is in the works; if you'd like to help create a piece of sacred technology, please get in touch.

Thank you, Creator Spirit! Thank you, Mother Earth! Thank you, all my relations!
