Spiritual Detective

by Judy Winters

Communication with the spirit realm is very simple: we connect to it through ritual and get our answers in metaphors and synchronicities. What's simple, however, is not always easy. Many-a-time I have wanted to scream, “Why can't you just speak the answer - in English?” But for the spirits, English and all other human tongues are second languages at best. If you really want to get somewhere you've got to be vigilant for clues and metaphorically astute. In other words, a certain worldview is necessary to do spiritual detective work.

For example, recently when I asked a client, whom I will call Marnie, why she had come to see me, she said, “I haven't even had time to think about it. The job stress has been so bad, but there's nothing I can do about that.” Then she became very quiet. I have learned that it is best not to rush to fill silences, and my reward was not long in coming.

“I don't know why I'm telling you this,” Marnie confided, “but recently  a friend of mine gave me some of the effects of a Native American acquaintance who had died. One of the items was a braid of something I did not recognize.” Her eyes wandered around the room, stopping momentarily at the bookcase. Then, mouth agape, she pointed at the braided sweetgrass on the second shelf. “That thing there - that's what she gave me!”

In that moment, something stirred in my own brain. Where had I recently encountered the idea of sweetgrass? It was another client with whom I had been using the Mayan Oracle cards. In that deck, each glyph card is accompanied with a list of aids for manifesting what the card represents, and with this particular card sweetgrass was one of the aids. I reached for the Oracle and flipped through the glyphs until I found the card in question. It was “Ik,” a black, white, and gray card, layered with a cross atop a series of circles and squares. I handed it to Marnie and asked her to gaze quietly at it. Within seconds she went into a trance and asked if she could lie down. While she was down, I talked to her about how her belief in stress was creating her reality and how when we send out stress vibrations, we get the same back, so that the stress becomes a vicious cycle. I suggested that she consciously start changing the vibrations she was sending out. When I finished my little spiel, she sat up and said, “Whew! I don't know what happened to me that I had to lie down, but I feel so much better now.”
