Breathe article continued from last page, click here! The
breath as a physical
system is connected
with our whole being
in two
ways... First is that the lungs as the organs of breathing
are passive. The
lungs depend
on the function of
the diaphragm and
the external muscles
of
respiration
on the rib cage and
shoulder girdle. The
role of the diaphragm
as a connection between
the chest and abdomen
is significant not
just physically but
emotionally and spiritually.
Alexander Lowen in
Bioenergetics discusses
the crucial importance
of the diaphragm in
allowing a feeling
connection to the
heart. This is where
our emotional impulses
influence our sexual
feelings and functioning
as well as our sense
of our personal connection
and interactions with
others. Many spiritual
teachers emphasize
the importance of
Diaphragmatic breathing
and exercises using
the breath for opening
the heart. Breath
therapy is a highly
personal, experiential
process that uses
Breath,
movement and
process techniques
to clear out physical,
mental and emotional
blocks and resistances.
It consists of a variety
of circular and conscious breathing techniques that can be described
as a relaxed, connected
and uninhibited way
of breathing. This
breathing pattern
triggers a natural
process of
cleansing and purifying
in both the body and
the psyche. The combination
of deep relaxation,
openness of the body
and mind, and increased
oxygen intake, tends
to dissolve everything
that stands in the
way of the body's
natural desire to
move towards completion
and wholeness. The
origin of most human
behavioral difficulties
is tied into Birth
and very
early childhood
experiences. Early
in life emotions are
suppressed physically
by tensing muscles
and restricting the
breath. Over time,
this protective process
becomes chronic and
automatic. The capacity
to experience and
express emotions is
lost. This repression
saps vitality and
the ability to experience
all emotions, including
the positive feelings
of love, joy and pleasure. Breath
therapy directly increases
our ability to handle
positive energy. Most
of us do not allow
ourselves to have
as much pleasure in
our lives as we should.
Conscious breathing
actually retrains
your nervous system
to tolerate a higher
charge of energy.
As you work out distortions
in breathing, you
can
then focus
on raising your energy
level. As an adjunct
to psychotherapy,
for personal growth
and development, stress
management, or spiritual
awareness, breath
therapy offers an
opportunity for deep
healing and integration,
creates a sense of
unity with the Self
and the world, and
brings about permanent,
positive life changes. Breath
is the key to the
mystery of life, to
that of the body as
well as to that of
the spirit. -
