But today her angels had heavy hearts.                    

Cell phones didn't work at all, and telephone landlines only  sporadically. Within the World Trade Center's massive destruction were powerful communications antennae that previously connected thousands of  local homes and businesses.              

So Susan Chamberlain did what came naturally. From her car, through her  tears, she prayed, and she knew: He's got the whole world in His hands.                   

For the last four years Susan says she has meditated at least three  times daily: early in the morning, at mid-day, and again before bedtime. On  that Tuesday her mid-day prayer work to invoke the sacred was the most “on  purpose” it had ever been.           

As Susan looked inward she was able to connect with her 36-year-old  sister, Michele, trapped in a smoky stairwell, running and crying, her face  smeared with black soot. All day long the family would alternate between hopeful,  confused, and panic-stricken. Michele had left them a frantic phone message  at 8:50 a.m., saying that she and her coworkers were “okay, and just trying  to get home.”            

It was their final contact with the young mother of one.
