Well-Read Witch Article continued from last page If
you have an interest in sacred geometry, you actually have two newly-released
decks to choose from: The Sacred Geometry Oracle Deck
(sixty-four full-color cards and book) by Francene Hart (Bear
& Company) and the Sacred Geometry Oracle: Become the
Architect of Your Life (thirty-three cards
and book) by John Michael Greer (Llewellyn). Both decks are
gorgeous; Francene Hart's is the more colorful, while Greer's
set emphasizes simplicity of design. The Greer set includes themes
on each card, making it especially useful for beginners; while the
Hart deck, with almost twice as many cards, provides a much more
indepth tool. Each of these decks can be used not only as a tool
for divination, but also as a curriculum for learning the basic
principles of esoteric geometry. The book accompanying each set
provides a basic course in sacred geometry, as well as ideas for
using the cards in meditation or in readings. The Greer/Llewellyn
deck is also one of the most nicely packaged divination sets I've
ever run across. The cards and book can be easily accessed from
the top of the box. Also from Bear and Company comes a revised edition of the classic Inner Child Cards: A Fairy Tale Tarot (seventy-eight color cards and book) by Isha Lerner and Mark Lerner with illustrations by Christopher Guilfoil (Bear and Company). One of the most colorful of Tarot decks, this set deftly weaves images from children's literature with the powerful archetypes of the Tarot (such as the Big Bad Wolf standing in for the devil). Aside from being a lovely deck, it's a great tool for getting your inner child and higher self to connect. Finally,
here are two gift sets from John Matthews, neither of which
is a divination set but both may be of interest to earth-centered
spiritual seekers. Celtic
Totem Animals (book, drumming CD, and twenty totem animal
cards) by John Matthews (Red Wheel) is a toolkit for doing
shamanic work with the mythic animals of the druid tradition. If
you don't already have a shamanic drumming CD, then it's
worth having, but if you do, the disc is basically redundant. Meanwhile,
the tiny cards (about half the size of a business card) are cute,
but hardly practical for readings or meditative use. Fortunately,
the book is filled with useful information (particularly a series
of animal stories from the Celtic tradition). The
Green Man: Spirit of Nature (plaque and book) by John
Matthews (Red Wheel) combines a nicely designed Green Man plaque,
suitable for hanging indoors or out, with a brief but informative
book on the history and spirituality of this artistic symbol. It's
an ideal gift item for the Druid or Pagan in your life. Carl McColman is a spiritual consultant, Tarot reader, and teacher. His newest book is The Complete Idiot's Guide to Paganism (Alpha Books). |
