Kathryn Sargent The sound of gentle waves lapping at the shore begin Water Down the Ganges, by Prem Joshua and Manish Vyas. A modern beat and very modern melody line follow, though the instrumentation is ancient; sitar, tablas, and santoor combine beautifully with modern flute, soprano sax and keyboards. This is a lovely meeting of the ancient and modern, Eastern and Western worlds, with all-original music by Prem Joshua and Manish Vyas. Prem Joshua's background is in Western rock and jazz, but his spiritual search took him to India, where he studied Indian classical and folk music. He has continued to travel and study there for many years. His partner, Manish Vyas, is a preeminent tabla and santoor player, born of a family of musicians in Western India. The two have played together for fifteen years and recorded ten albums. The album liner notes draw exquisite word pictures of life along the Ganges, and the music is as sensuous and magical as the Holy River itself. Highly recommended! As
a response to the 9.11 tragedy, a group of musicians organized by Eric Chapelle composed
and recorded a compilation album of piano music, the proceeds
to benefit the victims of 9.11. They formed a non profit called
The Heart Aid Project, and the resulting CD is titled
The Heart Aid Project: a 9/11 Benefit Piano Collection.
There are seventeen uplifting and healing tracks, featuring
Robin Spielberg, Ray Lynch, Eric Chapelle, Ira Stein, Julie
Rivers, Ken Pederson and others. These sensitive instrumentals
are a welcome addition to any music collection, and all royalties
will be donated to charities benefiting families and victims
of 9.11. |
