Hypnotherapy Article continued from last page

None of the people from Texas were in the union and expressed lots of anti-union sentiment. Apparently, Texas Hypnotherapists don't think they need a union to help them do anything. They are a fiercely independent lot and are proud to live in a right-to-work state. Nevertheless, here they are, about to lose their right to practice their profession and they don't know what to do. When personal security is threatened, people are usually more willing to listen to advice and so they listened to me describe how Georgia Hypnotherapists work with the Georgia AFL-CIO to accomplish our objectives.

One of the things they mentioned was their fear that their congressional support would diminish if they associated with the union. I pointed out to them that that support didn't appear to be helping them now. They were also concerned that the union would take over and dictate to them how to proceed, possibly to the detriment of Hypnotherapists. I explained that the Georgia AFL-CIO lobbyists are advisors to us and support what we want to do. When our union gives us advice it is based on their considered judgment as what is the most efficacious and expedient way to accomplish something we want, based on their vast experience in the political process. We Hypnotherapists don't have that kind of expertise. What most of us know about politics is sparse at best. We need help! The union knows what to do and most importantly, how to do it.

Dr. Giles suggested that Texas Hypnotherapists begin practicing in strict accordance with the NGH Standards of Practice and NGH Ethics. By adhering strictly to these rules, which have been tested in many states successfully, Hypnotherapists run the least risk of encountering legal obstacles. The Texans agreed to do so. However, they need a more pro-active approach to protect their freedom and that, ultimately, is the “Freedom of Access” bill that we are working on in Georgia. There are other things they can do to get themselves out of the current difficulty, and the union can help them decide what course of action to take now, along with the help they get from NGH headquarters.

All 25 of the Texas Hypnotherapists opted to join the union immediately.
