The Natural South

You've all been reading about the invasive species of snakeheads (fish) found in Maryland and other places that can actually walk across land, survive without water for several days and eat absolutely everything in sight, eradicating other species. But did you know that Atlanta has its own invasive species, which is just as negative, called the Asian rice eel? This predator has been found in several ponds near the Chattahoochee River. This problem is believed to stem from aquarium dumping, or someone getting tired of their fish and dumping exotic species into the environment without thinking of the repercussions. This and all other issues dealing with the environment in the Southeast is the focus of the television show “The Natural South” shown on Turner South Network Saturdays at 6:30 pm and repeated during the week.

Suzan Satterfield created the show much because of her own intentions to do something that mattered. Suzan felt good about doing a show on the environment and the idea sold quickly. The staff is largely made up of women, which Suzan is also proud of, and they are a “fabulous and dedicated team.” She said the host of the show, Kathy Sakas, is a knowledgeable naturalist in her own right, the previous host of another nature show and they were lucky to find a woman that met their requirements so well.
