Lead,
Follow, or Get Out of the Way

I
heard a saying recently, “Lead, follow, or get
out of the way.” I am not a leader in the peace
movement, but I am privileged to be a follower, to trail
behind and hold onto the gentle coattails of those who
dedicate their lives to fostering peace and human dignity
in the world. I do my little piece for peace by working
with some of these wonderful people.
I
look with awe at these gentle, courageous souls, these
warriors of
peace. They are the lights in the darkness; I am their
shining reflection. They are the voices in the silence;
I am their echo. They are the pulse in the emptiness;
I am their spark.
Peace
is a process. You can help it or hinder it. It's
up to you. If you're not a leader in the peace movement,
be
a follower. If you cannot be either, at least don't
stand in its way. Don't block the road with judgments,
hatred, or prejudice. Get out of the way and let peace
progress.
The
Dalai Lama once said, “If you can't help your
fellow humans, at least don't hurt them.” If you
don't actively promote the spreading of peace and
love, at least don't hurt it. Work silently toward
healing your own heart through meditation and loving,
positive thoughts. Be aware of every negative energy
you throw out into the universe and its consequences.
Be aware of every positive energy you bless the world
with and its consequences. Try to reverse negative patterns
in your life. Try to love and
be
grateful for everyone and everything in your path. If
nothing else, smile at every person you see and try
to see the good in them. Think loving thoughts and be
grateful for everything. Try it for a day, and then
keep going. May each minute of peace become an hour,
a day, a week, until we find ourselves aware of it,
immersed in it, empowered and set free by it.
A
current of higher awareness and unconditional love is
slowly - very slowly and cautiously - weaving its way
into the fabric of our collective consciousness. Feel
the spark, no matter how elusive or distant. If each
of us can flip on one tiny switch, we can light up the
world.
