Deepak
Chopra and The Center for Mind-Body Medicine
By
Sandra Randel
Birmingham's
Center for Mind-Body Medicine subscribes to all
the same philosophies of healing as Deepak's
own Chopra Center for Well Being, in La Jolla,
California. The medical facility has physicians
trained in both western medicine and the ancient
Indian holistic practice of Ayurveda (pronounced
R-U-Vayda). Ayurveda places great emphasis on
prevention and encourages maintaining health by
paying close attention to balance in life, from
the thoughts you think to diet, lifestyle, herbs
and removing toxicity.
Dr.
Amrik Walia, the Director of The Center for
Mind-Body Medicine, studied Alternative Medicine
at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School
of Medicine and took clinical training at the
Mind-Body Medical Institute at Harvard Medical
School. That's when he decided to open a center
for Mind-Body Medicine in the south. According
to Dr. Walia, There are no conditions which
cannot be helped by Mind-Body medicine. However
certain medical conditions need immediate medical
intervention. Uniting modern medicine with complementary
medicine makes it today's medicine; immediate
relief and long term prevention.
Birmingham's new Center for Mind-Body Medicine opened recently with a workshop hosted by Dr. Deepak Chopra. Dr. Chopra's new workshop series Creating Health & The Reversal of Aging teaches the principals of his new book Grow Younger, Live Longer. Both the book and the workshop offer practical guidance for reversing the effects of chronological aging on health and energy. Sandra:
Namaste, Dr. Chopra. Yesterday you opened
the Mind-Body Clinic in Savannah and today you
are in Birmingham conducting a workshop and opening
The Center for Mind-Body Medicine here. You have
a demanding schedule, yet every time I see you
you're never hurried. How long have you been able
to maintain this level of peace?
Deepak:
It was 1980; I think it's been about 22 years
now. It came suddenly. It was a sudden shift.
Sandra:
Your work has had tremendous impact on social
change in the area of healing and human consciousness.
When you look at your life's work do you see the
accomplishments you've made or the work left
to do?
Deepak:
(Chuckling) I'm still deciding what I'll
do when I grow up. I'm still at that stage.
I don't know. I feel I'm still at the
beginning.
Sandra:
What do you see when you look five to ten
years into the future of Mind-Body Medicine?
Deepak:
I see that it will be mainstream. That there
will be great ways to look at the Mind-Body connection
using technology. I'm getting very interested
in the new technology that measures not only the
heart and the brain, and all that's happening
in the body but also what's happening both
in your mind and in deeper levels of consciousness.
I think that in time technology will validate
even the spiritual component of Mind-Body Medicine.
