The
beautiful new amphitheater and Student Center at
Georgia's Kennesaw State University was the site
of CAMAFest 2001 this September. Dannion Brinkley,
author of bestseller Saved by The Light,
was the keynote speaker on Sunday. His story captivated
the audience as he told about dying three different
times. He also shared how after surgery he was in
tremendous pain that no drug could suppress. Chiropractic
care reversed the pain in a very short time. Conventional
medicine saved my life. Alternative medicine keeps
me living was his message. CAMAFest is the
brainchild of the Atlanta-based Complementary -
Alternative Medical Association (CAMA). This year's
joint effort with the KSU School of Nursing and
Center for Health Promotion and Wellness provided
an educational platform for this annual Health and
Wellness Expo. The KSU School of Nursing has offered
complementary/ alternative medicine (CAM) for-credit
courses for the past two years. Their Wellness Center
promotes healthy lifestyle habits and consumer responsibility.
The collaboration of these groups created an ideal
team to bring CAM education to the public.
Amid
the sounds of thirteen live band performances throughout
the weekend, over seventy speakers and exhibitors
displayed information and/or shared their expertise
about the low cost, safety and efficacy of their
goods and services. Exhibitors included associations
such as the Georgia Chiropractic Association
and American Herbalist Guild, schools such
as Atlanta West School of Hypnotherapy and
the Academy of Somatic Healing Arts, newspapers
such as Aquarius, health food stores such
as the Natural Market Place, wholistic health
centers and individual practitioners. Music selections
ranged from jazz by The Amazing Lizardo Band
to folk rock by Selene McCarthy and the Silver
Rock Band. Massage recipients were soothed by
harp selections by Cheryl Webb and Nancy
Addison. Lectures were offered to
visitors teaching about such therapies as Reiki,
Herbs, Healing Touch, Acupuncture, Homeopathy and
living foods. It was an opportune time to learn
while having fun.
Many
times it's consumer knowledge that will make
the difference between becoming healthier or simply
medicating the symptoms as their health declines,
explained Marge Roberts, President of CAMA. CAMAFest's
goal is to educate the consumer about complementary/
alternative medicine (CAM) while at the
same time offering CAM-friendly practitioners and
businesses the opportunity to market their goods
and services.
