The
University for Human Goodness:
A
School for the Soul
By
Kathryn Sargent, Editor
He's
eighteen years old, fresh out of high school,
and he hasn't yet made up his mind about where
to go to college or what his major will be. He's
done some volunteer work and discovered how good
that makes him feel; he knows that whatever he
does, volunteering will have to be part of it.
She's
over seventy years old and she's 'been there
and done that'. She's really clear on
what she wants to do for the rest of her life;
she wants to serve others. What could these two
have in common, other than a commitment to service?
They are both students at the University for Human
Goodness.
Nestled
in a beautiful, rural setting on fifteen acres
of farm land in Winston-Salem, North Carolina,
the University for Human Goodness is more homey
and intimate than one might expect of most educational
institutions. The classroom building is a century-old
farmhouse, though the dormitory building is modern
and the multi-media lab is state-of-the-art. And
how many universities boast their own restaurant?
They can accommodate thirty live-in students,
and seventy or eighty commuting students. UfHG
just started this past year, so it hasn't reached
this level of admissions yet. Students who are
accepted will receive a year's admission, tuition,
and room and board at NO charge! Students only
need money for personal items and incidentals.
What
kind of student is accepted? Age doesn't matter.
Nor does sex, race, marital status, physical ability
or religious preference. What does matter is self-discipline,
self control, willingness to be open to feedback,
being open-minded, and most of all, being committed
to serve others. If you have a prior agreement
with your school, you may get college credit for
this program as an internship or work study project.
Several colleges have made arrangements with UfHG
to do this. This is a school that expects students
to change and grow; the academic part can be picked
up anywhere. University sources say, Most
educational organizations focus on students increasing
their knowledge. The UfHG focuses on increasing
their capacity to serve.
