I understand this condition from my own experience, because I too was a know-aware man. But then in an instant of enlightenment, I went from know awareness to no awareness. As soon as I knew I didn't know, I knew. Y'know? I'll put it another way. All of the knowing we fill our heads up with is to avoid a void. But emptiness is the space of all creation. It says so right in the Bible: “In the beginning vas the Void.” (Note: It is not widely known that the early God of the Hebrews spoke with a Yiddish Brooklyn accent.)

So instead of doing a void dance to avoid an unavoidable void, we must seek Holeness. That is why I recommend you carry your own box of Nothing with you at all times. This is nothing personal.

And I recommend that you stop throwing bait at all these spiritual masters. Believe me when I tell you this mental master-baiting will not get you nowhere. As my friend Brad Blanton says, “The mind is a terrible thing – waste it.”

Dear Swami:

You seem like a decent guy, so I can’t understand why you persist in questionable spiritual practices where there is truly just One Way. How about it Swami... Do you want to be saved?

Ed Heesive,
Iowa City, Iowa

Dear Ed:

Actually, I would rather be spent. What am I being saved for? I figure while I'm on the planet, I'd rather let Spirit use me until I'm all used up. Of course, when I go, I don't want to be overdrawn either, so learning to receive is an important practice. That is why I imagine that every day is Christmas morning filled with wonderful presents. If you think about it, each moment that presents itself is a pre-sent. And if we're not present for the presentation because we are too busy dwelling on pasts and buying futures, it is like having a large storage room filled with unopened gifts.

As for there being just One Way, it has always been my experience that traffic flows in both directions - giving and receiving. So my recommendation for a life well-spent is: delight in the present moment, gleefully open every present, and share your gifts with the world.
