Fibromyalgia:
A
Natural Step into the
Unknown

When
I was 17 years old,
my family went to Florida
for vacation and we
explored the beaches
in a big honkin'
motor home. One night,
while camping on Ft.
Myers Beach, my stepsister
and I had a terrible
fight. I left the motor
home in a huff and walked
on the beach, hoping
the rhythmic lapping
of the waves would bring
some peace. I'd
always enjoyed the ocean,
and that night all I
wanted to do was roll
up my jeans and stick
my toes in the water.
When I got to the edge
it was so dark that
all I could see was
the little band of froth
where the water hit
the sand, but the blackness
of the gulf and the
sky were completely
undifferentiated by
an invisible horizon
line.
There
I stood, jeans rolled
up, one foot suspended
above the sea and I
suddenly could not bring
myself to step into
the water. The black
void in front of me
played with my mind
and struck me with such
a feeling of panic toward
this abyss, that I was
immobilized, and
just
couldn't take the
plunge into that unknown.
I
was diagnosed with fibromyalgia
around the end of 1997,
but it was with me in
unnamed form for a long
time before I visited
a rheumatologist for
the first time. The
symptoms were typical
- chronic pain in the
neck, shoulders, low
back and hips, trouble
with sleep and depression.
Often debilitating low
back pain had been my
daily companion for
years.
I
had been in and out
of talk therapy for
chronic bouts of low-grade
depression, and finally,
at my lowest point,
I decided that I would
make a last ditch effort
at a natural solution
and clean out my system.
If that didn't work,
I would have to begin
taking anti-depressant
medication.
Several
friends had recommended
a
holistic practitioner
named Angela Moore,
so I called Angela and
made an appointment.
Little did I know that
she would change my
life so completely.

and spiritual teacher.
