Beth's lovely Scottish brogue was our first clue to the diversity of this campus. She explained that classes in language, life skills, and American culture help students of many nationalities adjust to personal and professional lives in a new and confusing environment. Students are not allowed to speak their native languages in class, to provide more practice. They may watch movies or video instruction with their teachers, stopping now and then to discuss why the actors are doing or saying particular things, as a way of analyzing the culture. Students learn what the American family is all about, the significance of holidays, what documents to carry with them, and other daily life skills.

Contrary to the layout of a typical American classroom, the Edgewood classrooms are a bit smaller, more intimate, and arranged with tables forming big squares so that everyone can see each other during discussions. Students may participate in morning Tai Chi classes to keep their bodies healthy, or join the Math Olympiaad, or take field trips. There is even a summer camp program for kids.

The most beautiful facility on campus is undoubtedly the Oriental Body Therapy Clinic. I couldn't help comparing it with my recent hospital stay, where a woman cleaned and mopped my room at midnight, with every light in the room glaring. At Edgewood's Clinic, the atmosphere is serene and the furnishings are beautiful. The waiting area is a lovely room with subdued lighting, comfy chairs and pillows, framed calligraphy on the walls, and exquisite bamboo hardwood floors. The treatment rooms, in fact all of the rooms I saw, had air purification  equipment. Each treatment room has separate thermostat controls for the patients’ comfort. Soft, oriental music emanated from a sound system in one room, and massage tables stood in the center of each room, islands in the midst of the bamboo flooring.  Everyone was quiet and considerate of the patients receiving treatment.
