The Well-Read Witch

By Carl McColman

Celtic spirituality. Here's a concept that has inspired the mystical yearning of a wide variety of people. Christians find in the timeless wisdom of the Celts a doorway toward a more balanced, ecologically sustainable form of religion, while Pagans see the Celts as a chief source of inspiration for the ways of the Goddess and Witchcraft. Even people with no particular religious persuasion at all might find in the Celtic shaman, the Irish fairy faith, or the traditions of King Arthur and the Holy Grail, powerful tools for personal growth and inner development.

What all this basically means is there's no one single form of 'Celtic spirituality.' It's far more accurate to see the Celts as having given the world a variety of approaches to mysticism and spiritual development. Here's a look at several books that explore the rich landscape of Celtic wisdom, from a number of different perspectives.

Celtic Wicca: Ancient Wisdom for the 21st Century by Jane Raeburn (Citadel Press) introduces the reader to a powerful vision of how contemporary witchcraft can be centered on the Gods and Goddesses of ancient Celtic lore, particularly the deities worshipped after the Romans conquered Gaul and Britain. Focussing on Irish, Welsh, Gaulish and Romano Celtic deities, this Craft tradition combines the familiar tools and trappings of Wicca with a profound reverence for specifically Celtic tradition. One wonderful quality of this book is the devotion that Raeburn shows to (gasp!) scholarship. She encourages the aspiring witch to do research on the Gods and Goddesses they wish to honor and invoke in ritual. She leads the reader through the process of creating and enacting ritual, providing a sample ritual dedicated to Sulis, the Goddess of the hot water springs located in modern Bath, England. Raeburn also considers how the grand tradition of Celtic artistry can influence the creative dimension of modern pagan practice.
