This Rinpoche provides a traditional Tibetan-style education. This old teaching style, this student continued, is a very valuable part of the experience, though unusual for most of us who want to be entertained in perfect English and have the teaching done 'our way'. In effect, the students have to get into his head, rather than vice versa. Rinpoche's teachings will be translated by Geshe Lobsang Tenzin, Ph.D., whose English is exceptional.
Glenn
Mullin, noted
author and Tibetologist,
recommends
Rinpoche as one
of the greatest
living Tibetan
mystics of our
era, a true Francis
of Assisi in Buddhist
garb. He is one
of the three highest
lamas in the Dalai
Lama's school
of Tibetan Buddhism,
and has been instrumental
in the preservation
of Tibet's
ancient spiritual
culture in India.
Rinpoche
has studied both
sutra and tantra
(the scriptural
and esoteric traditions)
at the highest
level. Former
students say that
he uses a no-nonsense
teaching style
appropriate for
the level of the
students. Likely
to be strictly
business at first,
later he will
warm up with stories
of his personal
experiences.
The
teaching for his
Atlanta weekend
retreat (March
22-24) for the
healing and protection
of America will
focus on Avalokiteshvara
and the practice
of compassion.
It is traditionally
used when there
has been an attack
or a disaster
and people harmed.
He will do an
empowerment
which non-Buddhists
will receive as
a blessing.
It involves extensive
visualization.
Aquarius editor
Kathryn Sargent
referred to the
power of visualization
in the January
issue, stating,
You have
the power to effect
change... pray,
and yes visualize
in the name of
world peace. You
can make a difference.
Buddhists
who attended his
teachings in the
past have said
they believe that
a non-Buddhist
could benefit
from his teachings
and presence.
Some say he is
a Bodhisattva,
someone who willingly
returns to this
earth for the
benefit of all
sentient beings.
Another student
says The
seed of dharma
was awakened in
me by the sound
of his teachings,
and it was a most
profound experience.
Dharma generally
means the teachings
that reveal the
way things really
are, that
put one on the
path to enlightenment.
A
nun who received
her vows from
Rinpoche states
that he started
her on the path
of purity,
that he still
continues to practice
meditation every
day, and that
he truly walks
the talk.
Another
student says that
it is great to
just be around
him, with all
his positive energy;
you know he is
the real
McCoy. Another
person added,
I believe
anyone could benefit
from his presence
and teaching in
that he represents,
lives, and teaches
'indisputable'
ultimate truth.
Whether or not all agree it is indisputable ultimate truth, the prayers for protection can't hurt, and might help heal, America.
