HEALTH
IS NATURAL, WE ARE NOT
By Warren Grossman , Ph.D.
I
spent the better part of a year in bed fifteen
years ago. I had returned from a trip to
Brazil with a parasite in my liver, and
according to my physician, an extremely
dim prognosis. By the time I was able to
leave my bed, I was very weak, hard of hearing,
a bit paralyzed on my right side and a lovely
shade of jonquil yellow. Spontaneously,
I was drawn outdoors, especially to the
earth and the trees. Irrationally, yet without
a moment of doubt, I knew that my healing
could happen here in nature. I would spend
long hours lying on the earth, leaning on
the trees and paying close attention to
the experience of, what I now believe, was
returning home, to take my place among my
fellow organisms and to become well in the
healthiest of all places, nature. As my
strength returned, I slowly discovered that
I was a healer and not a psychologist. After
turning in my suit, tie and briefcase, I
have spent these years learning to heal
myself and others (to master healing is
to pay careful attention
to nature and to one's own experiences),
training others to be healers, writing about
healing and healing those who ask me for
help.
People
come to me asking for the spiritual assistance
they believe they must have to settle life's
problems. Aside from an authentic longing
for spirit, for the immaterial, people usually
end up asking me to help them lessen their
pain or despair. The obstacles to a good
life, one that is happy and vigorous, which
I have found in young and old students and
clients, are always the same. We all know
that we live in a sick environment (polluted
air, water and food). Now, bear with me
a few minutes and see how we Americans add
to our misery in this unhealthy place we
live. American culture has as little understanding
of the healthy use of the body as it does
of the healthy use of the environment.
Americans
are not healthy people. If we were we would
not have a huge medical industry, a drug
industry of amazing wealth, an overweight
population and a search for beauty led by
the media.
Our
sad condition can be summarized - and even
repaired - if we look at four parts of our
bodies that have been injured by cultural
practices and beliefs.
