Bryan Akipa, master of the Native American Flute, brings us his new release, Eagle Dreams (Makoche Recording). If you've read this column often, you've seen me raving about Akipa before. His music is the real deal, traditional Native American Red Cedar Flute songs, sweet and very moving. His music brings you close to nature and to spirit. Eagle Dreams begins with the meditative title song, Eagle Dreams, with the sound of a cold wind blowing in the background. Birdsong and flute bring in the first notes of Buffalo Nation, accompanied by crickets and the dry swish of a rattle. This music will bring you to stillness and calm like no other. Music for the soul...
Singing
Earth,
by Xavier Quilas
Yxayotl, features
this Huichol flutist
in a mysterious,
haunting collection
of songs with Mayan
and Aztec clay flutes.
Yxayotl, who previously
recorded Crossroads
with Robert Tree
Cody, is the founder
of America
Indigena,
a performance group
who specializes
in the music, instruments,
and dances of Native
Mexico. Although
the flute here sometimes
reminds me of more
familiar Native
American flute music,
the drumming isn't
Native American
style at all. Singing
Earth's
drumming conjures
images of a panther
prowling through
a jungle's shadows.
Singing Earth
is dramatic, sensual,
and wild. You must
hear this one!
Okay,
this is a departure
from music, but
I just want to make
sure you know about
a couple of art
events this month.
Generation
Arts: A Festival
for All Ages,
will be taking
place all month,
promoting art as
an entertainment
option the entire
family can enjoy.
The festival coincides
with National
Arts in Education
Month, and
will feature theatre,
dance, music, visual
arts, and hands-on
activities. Many
of the events are
free, and locations
range all across
the metro Atlanta
area. For more information
and schedules, see
www.generationarts.org,
or call 770.772.5572.
The
American Craft Council
Craft Show, March
16 and 17,
will feature more
than 250 top craft
artists from across
the nation. No,
folks, we're
not talking wooden
duck decoys, here;
we're talking
the best of contemporary
American craftwork.
Many of these artists
have designed special
pieces just for
this exhibit. Guests
will have the opportunity
to meet the artists
and purchase one-of-a-kind
art on display.
You'll see furniture,
metals, jewelry,
glass, ceramics,
and wearable art.
This is a strictly
juried show, which
will assure only
the highest quality,
original work. Tickets
are available by
calling 404.881.9980,
ext. 3273,
or visiting www.georgiatrust.org.
