World and New Age Music Reviews

By Kathryn Sargent

Sacred Circle: Bridging Nations Through Song (Think Big Records) is a collection by various artists and produced by Barry Goldstein, Ananuwa Rice and Keith Rice (who is also bringing the Sacred Circle Expo to Atlanta this month). These songs of spirit are sung by Laleh, John McKenna, Saphyre, Laurell, Barry “OHI” Goldstein, Phoenix, Sheila O'Donnell, Gina Black, and Creed de Avanzer. The title song, “The Sacred Circle Song,” really rocks! The lyrics of these songs express New Age principles; in “Messengers of Peace,” we're reminded that we have the power to create a world of peace. These are positive, uplifting songs with a good beat and most have fairly basic instrumentation that allows the singers to shine. The singers all have lovely voices, and I particularly enjoyed Saphyre's sultry “Spirit Song.” Look for this disc at Sacred Circle Expo or on the website at spirituallinks.net.

There's An Angel Watching You (Think Big Records) is another compilation of songs, this one inspired by angels. Many were written by Barry “OHI” Goldstein, who also produced the disc. Featured singers include Angela Workman, Gina Black, Debbie Derr, Fela, Phoenix, Aaron Paul, Kim Scarpone, Deanna Edit, Laleh, and Barry Ohi, some of whom are familiar from the previous disc mentioned here. There's a soft rock feel to this disc, with its danceable beats, guitars, and soulful lyrics. These songs are inspiring, uplifting and encouraging. This CD would be much appreciated by anyone who has suffered loss or struggled. Look for this one at Sacred Circle Expo, too.

The Irish Times raves of the band Altan that they are “the most dynamic and exciting band playing Irish music today.” It's easy to hear why once you've listened to The Blue Idol, their newest release. The technical quality of this recording is sterling, and the honest, straightforward presentation of Irish traditional music is fresh and spirited. Maihread Ni Mhaonaigh's voice is absolutely luscious, the fiddles and pipes exciting, and all to a driving beat. I was a bit stunned to find that Dolly Parton is featured as a guest artist, but her solo, “The Pretty Young Girl,” is exquisite. The Blue Idol is one of the best albums I've heard recently, and I can't recommend it highly enough.
