At Last! Affordable Alternative Care!

By Kathryn Sargent, Editor

“I'd love to have alternative health care,” an Aquarius reader wailed on the telephone. “But it costs almost as much as traditional medical care, and it's not covered by insurance. I simply can't afford it! Do you know anyone who charges less?” She asked.

At the time, I had no answers for her, but now I do! For the first time in the history of Georgia's IRS, someone has applied for and obtained Non-Profit, 501 ( c ) 3 status for an alternative health care center! World Community Healing Center in Smyrna, Georgia, has a mission: to provide quality alternative health care, even if the client has no money at all!

Focussing on educating their clientele about their healing process on body, mind, and spirit levels, the World Community Healing Center of Atlanta, Inc. (WCHC) offers classes and consultation on nutrition, exercise, and spinal hygiene (ergonomics and stretches). You can attend meditation, get a massage, Reiki, aromatherapy, reflexology, hypnotherapy, chiropractic adjustments, or naturopathic consultations. “There's something here to address the whole being: it's a body/mind/spirit approach. That's what made it so hard for the IRS to understand,” Christine Picior, one of the founders, laughs mischieviously. “But they came around. They saw it our way. It was a great blessing.”

If you ask about lower cost service, you will be asked to provide a copy of your pay stub (or other documentation) to show your income. If you have a job, but you have several children and one is sick, draining your budget, things like that will be taken into consideration, too. Your fee for services will be decided on a sliding scale, based on what you can afford. If you can't afford to pay anything, you will be asked to volunteer some time to help answer phones or do other jobs around the center. You will be welcome whether you can pay or not, as Christine Picior, Leigh Roessner, and their staff are “dedicated to the education and empowerment of all people to understand and utilize their inherent ability to heal their own lives.”

I asked Christine how she decided to do a non-profit center. She said she had a client whose daughter was very ill. The financial drain had become a family crisis, too. The woman said she'd love for her daughter to have alternative care, but they couldn't afford it. Christine and her daughter, Leigh, went to the family's home and worked on the client's daughter with Reiki, massage, and chiropractic. The daughter really got a lot out of it, though her illness eventually proved fatal.
