Ego
By
Ma Jaya Sati
Bhagavati
We
are all born
enlightened.
An
infant is born
with a very
quiet bliss
that covers
him or her in
the womb. As
the child is
born, the harshness
of reality breaks
through this
bliss and the
child cries
in want: I
am hungry, feed
me. I am in
need of love.
They're
not words; they're
feelings. With
the first breath,
a hunger sets
in. At first
the baby is
not crying from
ego, but as
a child grows
older, the thought
becomes, I
am not satisfied
with that which
I am fed, and
so
I hunger for
something else.
So, the very
first thought
that enters
the mind is
one of duality.
I need
becomes I
want and
the ego is born.
The ego is a
fine line that
separates needs
from wants.
As
we grow older,
the separation
becomes deeper.
Part of that
great sea that
one felt as
a newborn begins
to spread out
in the form
of attachments.
The child will
look everywhere
to fill that
heart. What
does he find?
Perhaps food,
drugs, alcohol,
sex, anger and
any form of
instant gratification.
Eventually he
may give up
on God, and
the hunger itself
becomes his
God.
Can
one appease
that hunger?
Not with instant
gratification.
When we understand
this we begin
to seek the
death of the
ego. There is
a higher ego
and a lower
ego. The ego
that must die
is the lower
ego.
Can we see our
own ego and
change it on
our own? Of
course we can,
but it is very
difficult without
a teacher who
has walked the
path ahead of
us. I believe
the ego must
be surrendered
to someone who
is so in love
with you that
she or he would
not care one
iota if you
loved him or
her back. It
could be a guru,
a teacher, a
religion, or
a man or woman
of wisdom.
