Abdelli's Among Brothers (Realworld) is like time traveling to a past resplendent in sound and textures of distant lands. Abdelli's voice weaves a common thread from his own Kabyl heritage (the original inhabitants of North Africa) through collaborations with musicians from Cape Verde, Burkina Faso, Argentina, Azerbaijan, Chile, Morocco, and Tunisia. You can hear the Kabyl's Egyptian flavor, the Moroccan beat, the South American rhythms, and more, making it a World Music disc in the purest sense. One thing that really sets this album apart is that it was recorded in natural settings, with everyday life going on around the musicians, instead of in a studio. The result is a warm, immediate energy that really involves the listener on a personal level. The percussion is hypnotic, the music a sensual delight. Enjoy this one with a lover!

If you love the Hindu Goddesses, especially Tara, you'll revel in the new CD, Shakti (Raven Recording). With noted artists like Chloe Goodchild, Gabrielle Roth & The Mirrors, Deva Premal, Jai Uttal, Bhagavan Das, Boris Grebenshikov, DJ Cheb I Sabbah, and Survana and Martyn Phillips, one could hardly go wrong with this disc. Each artist has given their own interpretation of traditional chants, with some individual  twists on the Om Tara chant in particular, and with a contemporary world flavor. Chloe Goodchild's “Om Tara” is sweetly devotional, and my favorite track. Bahavan Das gives a majestic interpretation of “Radhe Bolo.” This is a beautiful, contemporary vision of Goddess that remains true to Her grace, love, and healing.
