Gawain: A Spiritual Pioneer
By
Kathryn Sargent
Best selling author and teacher Shakti Gawain will visit Atlanta Unity
Church this month. Gawain is a pioneer in the field of personal growth
and one of the foremost teachers in affirmations and visualization.
She is an international workshop leader and has assisted thousands
of students in developing higher awareness, wholeness and balance
for more than twenty years. She and her husband live in Marin Co.,
California and on the island of Kauai, a place she has described as
one of the most powerful, healing, nurturing and just generally
supportive environments that I've ever been. Gawain holds
retreats in Kauai and in Marin County as well as other locations.
Her ground-breaking book, Creative Visualization, is
now in its 25th Anniversary Edition. It teaches techniques that lead
to the manifestation of all your heart's desires. Other books
to her credit include Living in the Light, The Path of Transformation,
Creating True Prosperity, and The Four Levels of Healing.
Shakti Gawain has her own publishing company, Nataraj Publishing,
which is a division of New World Library. Gawain co-founded New
World Library with Marc Allen, and she and her husband, Jim Burns,
co-founded Nataraj Publishing. She publishes all of her own
books and audios, in addition to books by other authors. Her books
have sold more than six million copies in thirty languages worldwide.
Shakti Gawain has appeared on national shows including Oprah, Sonja
Live, Good Morning America, The Larry King Show, The Leeza Show, and
New Dimensions Radio. She has been featured in publications including
Time Magazine, Body Mind & Spirit, Cosmopolitan, New Woman,
and New Age Journal.
Shakti (whose name means the female aspect of the Hindu God Shiva)
was an only child of parents who were both academics and atheists.
Her mother instilled in her a belief that our only limitations are
self-imposed, and that really, everything is possible. Her parents'
influence led to Shakti's attitude of openness and skepticism,
creating fertile ground for her to test and explore concepts, including
spirituality.
A broken love relationship began her quest to discover what it's
all about. Like many of us, she crammed information into her head,
reading and studying, until she realized that she needed to balance
the mental stimulation with physical expression. She studied psychology
and dance at Reed College and at the University of California.
