The Hindus teach us that the Divine essence of all that is is the creative summary of both male and female principle. And so do the Taoists, who show us the feminine and the masculine principle that feed one another and make up the whole in the symbol of Yin/Yang. Tibetan Buddhists do the same with their most sacred objects, the dorje and bell. The bell represents the feminine and the dorje is the male principal. No worship service is ever conducted without use of each, together, one held in each hand. The Gods and Goddesses personified in many traditions also have opposite sex consorts and cohorts who are considered “complements.”

In fact, in many systems of belief, you cannot have one without the other. Just as you can't have day without the night, you can't have man without woman, or masculine without feminine. To put it in very simple, practical form, you can forget about whole grain toast for the rest of your life... you can't plug in a toaster without both the male plug and the female outlet.

It is unfortunate for our world that the spiritual values that get the most publicity these days are faux religious values associated with hatred and violence, or traditions that attempt to lock us into an “either-or” dynamic when it comes to God and religion. For example: God is either male or female; you are either Catholic or Jewish; the Goddess is only for women and not for men. With a world filled with so many different ways to see, know and commune with the Divine, you would think by now that people would begin to grasp the idea that it is impossible for one way to be right and the other ways to be wrong. Religion, and how we experience the power and energy of divinity, is such a personal and subjective experience. Yet people continue to misunderstand one another's viewpoints and to use religion and God as an excuse for violence, separation and destruction.
