Clearly, some people find it radical, hard to believe, even sacriligious to consider that the male God of the Bible perhaps did not and does not act alone. I was one of them until I became an interfaith minister, and began to study the Divine Feminine. Not only did I discover Her many incarnations in world traditions today, but I found a rich and compelling history of Goddess worship. Ancient Goddesses were indeed treated with the reverence modern religious culture now offers to Jesus, God, The Father, Allah, Krishna, and Buddha. And they were called upon for everything from ensuring fertile crops and easy childbirth to attaining wealth, health or even a peaceful death.

It was astounding to discover She was there in the beginning of time and history and – poof – was gone. Talk about spin doctoring – the Divine Mother was edited right out of sacred writings, alluded to between the lines of religion, stashed in hidden scrolls or lost in burned libraries. Any place they could not ditch her completely, she was given a lesser role – such as the Goddesses who were transformed into virgin martyrs and “kept on” as Saints when the tides of religion changed. While Her presence has remained with us in Mary, our link to the ancient mothers, even she's not been given her due. Catholics, at least, love her and pray to her, yet the Reformation Movement helped lessen her place in other forms of Christianity. In the non-Catholic Christian world, the focus is only on Jesus, the fruit of her womb.

So it's no surprise we get a little skittish about acknowledging our Heavenly Mother. Even spiritual folks and healers can often agree on the concept of “feminine energy” yet stop short when it comes to the idea of a “Lady God.” Yet everything in our universe has both feminine and masculine components. Doesn't it make sense to consider that the Divine does too?

Many of the traditions from which ancient healing techniques and peaceful living are derived celebrate both. Hinduism, Shinto, Buddhism, Taoism, Native American and Shamanic traditions and the Earth-based religions are among the cultures that know and embrace divinity as masculine and feminine in essence and form.
