The
Dance of Intimacy:
Tantra
Tai Chi as a Path to Sacred Sexuality
By
Carl McColman
Diana
and Richard Daffner are the creators of
Tantra Tai Chi, a unique form of energy
work that involves integrating a Qigong-style
exercise practice with intimate interaction
with your beloved. A Tantra Tai
Chi video, produced by the Daffners,
demonstrates this graceful exercise. Diana
and Richard also lead Lessons in
Intimacy weekend workshops where
couples can explore a deeper level of
joyous intimacy through body awareness
and energy work. Although based in Tantra,
the group sessions do not involve any
nudity or sexual play; rather, couples
are given play assignments
which they can complete in their private
rooms.
Carl:
What is your mission as teachers of Tantra?
Richard:
We provide tools and inspiration to
couples who want to enhance and strengthen
intimacy in their love relationship and
their lives. Tantra embraces sexuality
as a spiritual path and helps couples
experience and direct sexual energy to
enrich their relationship. Tantric practices,
rituals and positions are taught to enable
physical presence and enhance joy and
intimacy.
Diana:
The beauty of Tantra is that it truly
blends the physical with the spiritual.
Couples have an extraordinary opportunity
to 'blend themselves into bliss,' and
we hope more people begin to understand
and practice this. Whenever this love
is experienced, it reverberates globally
and therefore contributes to world peace
and happiness. Just as a monk meditating
in a cave affects the consciousness of
the world, so do lovers have an influence
far beyond their bedroom.
Carl:
How did you get into this spiritual
path?
Richard:
It began when we discovered Margo
Anand's first book, The Art of
Sexual Ecstasy. Although Diana had
already been teaching energy awareness,
meditation, massage and Aikido for almost
twenty years and I had studied a number
of spiritual paths since the early 70's,
we were both profoundly impressed by the
power of the sexual exercises. Many books
and practices later we began to embrace
Tantra as a comprehensive life style and
a spiritual path. This has taken our great
relationship to heights way beyond our
imagination.
Diana:
There were other influences as well,
that we drew from spiritual paths that
we traveled separately and together, such
as women's groups and Native American
ways. So many people - especially women
- go to spiritual gatherings where they
experience an uplifting intimacy with
other like-minded people, but their partner
isn't part of that. We encourage couples
to create similar experiences within the
framework of their own loving. That way,
the relationship itself becomes a sanctuary,
a sacred vehicle for the journey into
Oneness.
