The music of Cesaria Evora's Sao Vicente (Windham Hill Records), is pure gold, soulful folk songs from the Cape Verde Islands off Africa's northwest coast. The music is in the morna genre, a mix of Portugese and island spirit. Each song is a gem in its own right, with guest artists such as Caetano Veloso, Chucho Valdes, Pedro Guerra, Bonnie Raitt, and the Orquesta Aragon. Evora's arresting contralto voice always commands attention and the varied orchestration for each piece - piano, guitar, bass, drums, sax, trumpet, flute, congas, bata, bongos, and strings, makes for a CD that is interesting from start to finish. When I listen to this music, I hear the freedom of the sea and sky and the pain and joy of experiencing life. - LN Newcomer
Jocelyn Woods has just
released a solo piano album called
A River's Journey,
which is her symbol for life's
initiatory path. At age 16, Jocelyn
has already been playing for eleven
years, having started lessons
at 3 yrs.! Maybe it's due
to the strength she has built
in overcoming physical challenges,
but Jocelyn's spiritual maturity
comes through in her music. She
includes music by Mendelssohn,
Schumann, and Bach, but her own
compositions are just as beautiful
as theirs, and no less meaningful.
A River's Journey
is a collection of personal
stories of the growing soul: stories
that I believe many others can
relate to and find inspiration
in. It is an incredibly exciting
journey for me to share these
heartsongs with the world,
Jocelyn writes. These 'heartsongs'
are meditative, inspiring, and
exquisite. They are as much from
the soul as from the heart; let
them speak to YOUR heart and soul!

While
it is not a new release, Benjamin
Iobst's Seven Metals:
Singing Bowls of Tibet (released
in 1999) is such a treasure I
want to make sure you are all
aware of it. This master of the
singing bowls has presented us
with a rare gift in this music;
it is, without doubt, the loveliest
recording of singing bowls
I
have encountered. Using gongs,
tingshas (small meditation cymbols),
and the rich sounds of 25 different
singing bowls, Iobst's compositions
are enough to transport the soul
otherwhere. The music is excellent
for meditation, astral work, Reiki,
yoga, massage, or just relaxing.
It is so incredibly peaceful,
so healing... - KS
