The eyes are the window to the soul, someone once said. Do you see the soul looking out at you through those eyes? Even if those eyes are tired and puffy, you can see that spark of the divine twinkling in their depths. If you've had a great day the twinkle may be loud and strong. But even if your day has been a challenge, that sparkle is still there. Look for it and affirm it. There lies your grace, the God-in you.

Why the eyes? If you look around, you'll see eyes as symbols of the divine in all sorts of places. Hispanic Catholics display the colorful ojo de dios. Chinese drivers hang blue dzi beads from their rearview mirrors. The eye of the divine even gazes out at us from U.S. paper currency. One of my favorite representations of the divine is an ancient Mediterranean figurine called the Eye Goddess. Her body is simplistic, her head featureless except for a startling pair of large, almond-shaped eyes. When I look at her, I look back at myself as well.

So have a good long look at your own eyes, then step back and look at your whole body. Just for a moment, reserve judgment and simply look. Look at your whole body as a living temple whose windows are those twinkling eyes. You can see your sparkling soul looking out through your eyes. You are within your body but you are much more than your body. Your body is the medium through which you experience this world and through which you express yourself. It is the tool that connects God and earth.

So the next time you find yourself criticizing your body, or making excuses for its imperfections, or avoiding looking at yourself in the mirror, remember what you saw in your own eyes. Remember what is inside your body, what sacred spark of the divine dwells in this physical temple. The more you think of yourself this way, the more comfortable you will become with your body, and that will make it easier to take care of yourself so that your body becomes just what you want it to be.

I salute the deity within you.
