Cancer:
From the Sentimental to
the Loyal

We
now are under the influence
of Cancer, the sign of
the zodiac ruled by the
fickle moon. Under this
sign, there is an urge
to feel a sense of belonging,
to feel that we are nurtured
and cared for. As a water
sign, Cancer tends toward
emotions, their ebb and
flow, helping us to feel
more connected to our
fellow human beings simply
by virtue of our ability
to sense their feelings.
Perhaps this sign is associated
with the archetypal unconscious
and hence has an unspoken
sense of universality
to it.
The sense of belonging can occur on many levels. Although we tend to think of this sign as that of the homebody, home can imply different things to different people. Natives of this sign can certainly feel comfortable carrying their home on their backs like the crab. When Cancers travel, it's not unusual for them to bring along something sentimental, something that makes them feel right at home. I'm not referring to the kitchen sink necessarily but perhaps their favorite pillow, pictures of family and friends or, dare I say, even their favorite stuffed animal. For
others the sense of home
may reach beyond the shell
of the home and actually
encompass their sense
of belonging to the community
- oftentimes their country
or their heritage. It
is not unusual for people
in the military to possess
strong Cancerian influences
in their charts because
they feel a sense of connection
to their roots by way
of their country. Cancer
being the sign of protection,
those in the military
feel they are fulfilling
the need to provide protection
to their fellow human
beings by serving their
country. With the sign
of Leo right next door,
it is natural that a sense
of pride also accompanies
this strong sense of patriotic
duty.
The
downfall of this sign
is that it tends to be
one of the more moody
signs of the zodiac. Yes,
the moon's rule provides
that fluctuating ebb and
flow, but it can also
be reflected by an acute
sense of the tide of feelings.
Hence, Cancers are more
prone to the emotional
roller coaster. If you
have a Cancer for a boss
or coworker, you might
want to note “what
side of the bed they woke
up on” before approaching
them with the day's
issues.
Mercury
enters this sign on the
7th and departs on the
21st. Therefore our thinking
patterns may follow a
more sentimental path
during this time. Don't
be surprised if you feel
a longing to connect with
history in some capacity
or dwell on such things
as family picture albums,
heirlooms and the like.
Focusing on the present
may prove to be a more
daunting task since Cancer
dwells either on how we
got where we are or the
"what ifs" of the future.
