January 2001: Plan, Innovate
by
Kathryn L. Silverton

With the new year upon us it's time to put our goals and priorities clearly in focus. The sign of Capricorn will be occupied by both the Sun and Mercury for a portion of the month. Since Saturn-ruled Capricorn represents ambition and structure, it's no wonder that we contemplate resolutions for the new year. Thankfully, Capricorn's ruler, Saturn, is in the practical and moderate sign of Taurus, a fellow earth sign. In plain English this means make your goals realistic. If some facets of your efforts seem to be stalling, don't dismay. Saturn moves forward on the 24th of the month, heralding a reversal of apparent inertia.

Venus moves into Pisces, its sign of exaltation, on the 3rd. An exalted planet is readily able to showcase its talents. In this case Venus, the planet of love and value, posited in the selfless sign of Pisces, turns our attention away from self gratification and toward the unconditional love of others. This love transcends religious or national boundaries and gives for the pure joy of fulfilling those in need, especially those enduring misfortune. The greatest danger of Venus in Pisces is allowing yourself to become a doormat for others. This visionary sign prides itself in aesthetic and often artistic leanings. Even those who can't draw a straight line or carry a note will likely appreciate the soothing impact that both art and music infer on our lives.

At 3:24 PM Eastern time on the 9th of the month we experience our first lunar eclipse of the year. The full moon in Cancer encourages us to invest in our heritage, our families, our homes and property. Beyond the material value, appreciate the richness of time, the experiences of those who've come before us. Without their contributions, our lives would not be what they are today. Once you've pondered these assets, go one step farther. Ask yourself where or how you want to figure into that grand scheme when others walk in your footsteps generations from now. Set forth long term goals, no matter how lofty, and find others whose paths complement your vision.

On the 10th, Mercury ingresses into its sign of exaltation, Aquarius. This positioning encourages us to think along innovative lines, scrapping the limits placed upon us by Saturn's sense of structure. Instead we are motivated by innovation and invention, spontaneity and improvisation. In fact, you may get a glimpse at moments of pure genius. Mental processes are more intuitive, and we're more likely to understand our fellow human beings, even those who are poles apart from us in mindset.

Mars stays its course in the mystery loving sign of Scorpio. Expect to be motivated by passions not readily visible to the naked eye. The desire to bring that which is hidden to the surface looms large. Don't be surprised if you're finally ready to dig into deep agendas. Address them head on, confront the darkness, only to realize that the dreaded anticipation was much worse than the experience itself. Sometimes we put so much energy into pretending something is not an issue, only to realize that by confronting that something, we unleash a whole new source of potential. Mars forces us into action. So aggressively seek out those burrs and remove them from the callous that has grown around it to protect it. With the source of infection gone, the callous eventually smoothes itself out.

On the 19th the Sun moves into Aquarius, recharging the electrical impulses in mind and body. Our inextricable ties to one another become blatantly obvious. Heed uncanny messages from your fellow humans with pure objectivity. They themselves may not even appreciate how timely their suggestions are.

The new moon in Aquarius occurs on the 24th, as Saturn moves direct. This convenient pairing assures that new ventures initiated with deliberation, forethought and an expectation for realistic, long term outcomes are more likely to succeed. Keep in mind the universal impact of your thoughts and actions.

Having hovered for months in the early degrees of Gemini, Jupiter moves forward on the 25th. Look for a myriad of new ideas to come rushing forward, including innovations in communications and other areas of technology. Because of its presence in the sign of the twins, look for multipurpose communications gadgets to flood an already crowded market.

And, despite the popularity of the Internet, print media is unlikely to decline, as Gemini relates to books and other publications. Newspapers may be gobbled up by some of the larger media conglomerates.

In astrology as well as life in general, it helps to be aware of not only what is present, but also that which is absent. With the exception of the planet of Pluto, one of the slowest moving planets in our solar system, there are no planets in a fire sign During the month of January. Fire signs spur us on, give us that zest for life and action. In its absence we may have to find ways of manufacturing our own adrenaline.
