Recovering
From
Childhood
Abuse
Through
Holistic
Therapies
by
Dr.
Vladimir
Fleisher,
ND,
Ph.D.
A
major
breakthrough
of
modern
medicine
was
discovering
the
role
of
stress's
impact
on
health.
This
has
awakened
the
Western
World
to
the
ancient
Asian
knowledge
of
the
mind/body
connection.
This
knowledge
has
identified
the
role
of
psychological
and
emotional
factors
in
developing
many
somatic
(physical)
diseases.
A
study
of
acute
and
chronic
stress
determined
that
an
individual
can
have
a
failure
to
adjust
to
the
stressor
or
can
be
able
to
adapt
to
the
stressor.
The
failure
to
adjust
or
the
ability
to
adapt
depends
on
an
individual's
previous
experience
when
he/she
was
exposed
to
a
stressor
and
also
based
on
the
duration
and
severity
of
the
stressor.
Another
important
factor
is
the
individual's
perceived
control
or
lack
of
control
over
the
situation
and
their
level
of
social
support.
Clinical
medicine
mostly
focused
on
adult
stress
while
the
affects
of
childhood
stress
(as
a
result
of
abuse)
were
overlooked.
Now
we
are
aware
that
over
60%
of
the
population
have
suffered
childhood
abuse.
Common
types
of
abuse
include:
physical,
emotional,
sexual,
single-parent
households,
having
an
adult
alcoholic
or
drug
addicted,
mentally
ill,
or
incarcerated
household
member.
Recent
studies
show
that
individuals
who
suffered
such
childhood
abuse
and
stress
have
a
higher
risk
of
developing
health
problems
in
adulthood.
Extreme
stress
during
childhood
significantly
decreases
an
individual's
ability
to
adapt
because
children
typically
have
no
ability
to
control
or
manage
the
situation
and
this
perception
carries
over
into
their
adulthood.
So,
these
individuals
lack
the
ability
to
adapt
to
even
small
stressors
that
other
people
tend
to
manage
easily.
My
personal
study
at
The
Centers
for
Disease
Control,
1999-2001,
shows
an
additional
link
to
adult
social
malfunctioning.
These
adults
have
more
serious
financial
problems,
work-related
problems,
and
relationship
problems.
Clinical
experience
shows
that
overlooking
these
childhood
histories
of
stress
often
leads
to
reduced
effectiveness
of
any
therapeutical
intervention
in
adulthood.
For
example,
a
study
found
that
in
a
weight
loss
program
most,
among
those
who
lost
weight
and
gained
more
weight
back
in
a
few
months
after
the
program,
had
a
history
of
sexual
abuse.
Adverse
childhood
experience
was
also
linked
to
having
a
resistance
to
therapy
and
a
history
of
fibromyalgia,
many
exploratory
surgeries,
and
many
unexplained
experiences
of
chronic
pain.
