HYPNOBIRTHING®-
Assisting,
Not
Resisting,
Birth
By
Jeanne
Driscoll-Dunn
Childbirth
without
pain?
It's
possible,
according
to Marie
F. Mongan
in her
book,
HypnoBirthing®-
A Celebration
of Life.
Her
program
was
developed
in 1989
and
is based
on the
work
of English
obstetrician,
Dr.
Grantly
Dick-Read.
HypnoBirthing
proponents
subscribe
to the
belief
that
when
a woman
is given
the
proper
preparation
for
childbirth,
she
and
her
birthing
companion
can
experience
a safe,
serene
and
satisfying
birth,
free
of the
fear
that
so often
causes
tension
and
discomfort.
HypnoBirthing
Practitioners
believe,
and
have
witnessed,
that
when
the
human
mind
and
body
are
in harmony,
nature
is free
to function
in the
same
well-designed
manner
that
it does
with
all
other
creatures.
The
natural
process
of birthing
is respected.
The
concept
of easier
birthing
can
be more
readily
accepted
and
more
easily
understood
when
you
consider
that
it is
the
mind
that
thinks
and
perceives.
The
process
is based
on the
belief
that
what
is experienced
by the
body
can
be determined
by the
mind;
therefore
what
the
mind
chooses
to accept
or perceive
as being
real,
the
body
responds
accordingly.
So in
birthing,
when
the
mind
accepts
that
without
complication
birthing
proceeds
naturally,
then
birthing
can
proceed
naturally
and
be pleasant.
The
body's
physiological
response
is to
feel
only
the
tightening
or pressure
of a
uterine
wave
as it
goes
about
its
task
of dilating
the
cervix
and
expelling
the
baby
naturally.
Unfortunately,
over
time,
we have
been
conditioned
to not
respond
harmoniously
with
our
bodies.
Often
unnatural
interventions
have
actually
restricted
and
slowed
the
natural
birthing
process.
In
order
to achieve
a high
level
of confidence,
belief
and
trust
in the
natural
capabilities
of our
wondrous
bodies
we must
dispel
the
many
pre-conceived
ideas
and
stories
that
have
been
passed
from
generation
to generation
and
serve
only
to prepare
us for
unpleasant
and
long
birthing
processes.
The
HypnoBirthing
Program
offers
a series
of five
classes
to mothers
and
their
birthing
partners
to prepare
them
on several
different
levels
- physically,
emotionally
and
spiritually.
Today
there
are
many
programs
designed
primarily
to acquaint
people
with
the
medical
model
and
educate
parents
to the
drugs,
technological
equipment
and
medical
procedures
that
are
routinely
in use
at the
hospitals.
Some
suggest
that
the
pain
is natural
and
intended
and
that
experiencing
pain
is an
empowerment
of one's
womanhood.
HypnoBirthing
is predicated
on the
belief
that
as a
woman,
birthing
can
be experienced
through
your
own
natural
birthing
instincts-serenely,
comfortably,
with
dignity
and
with
as little
medical
intervention
as possible.
The
program
teaches
and
encourages
allowing
the
natural
flow
and
rhythm
of your
laboring
body
to lead;
to release
birthing
over
to your
mind
and
body
and
to trust
the
body
to function
as it
was
intended
to,
thereby
alleviating
excessive
pain.
HypnoBirthing
teaches
natural
relaxation
techniques
to allow
the
body
to work
with
neuromuscular
harmony,
assisting
rather
than
resisting.
