Uncovering
What You
Want
By
Suzanne
Wright
About
I learned
that my
job was
being eliminated;
simultaneously,
an intimate
relationship
ended. Very
similar
events unfolded
in the winter
of 1998,
just two
scant years
ago. I wailed,
"Why is
this happening
to me again?"
I questioned
myself:
"What haven't
I learned
what I need
to learn,
once and
for all?"
The question I had yet to satisfactorily answer is "What do you want?" Beads of sweat broke out on my upper lip when I started really contemplating my heart's desire. I approached this vexing question by deciding to slowly eliminate what I don't want from my life. Over time, the haze has cleared and I am increasingly in touch with what I want in both my work and personal life.
Here
are a few
ideas you
might try:
Revisit
your dreams.
How do you know if your dreams-those things you really want in your life-are not being honored? I noticed I was increasingly more irritable, angry, and tired. I found myself compromising more than was appropriate - clues that something was wrong. I realized I wasn't giving myself permission to want other, different things. In short, my dreams were being denied. I had to unearth them again, bring them into the light and give them a chance to succeed.
Practice
saying no.
It can be really scary to say no. We humans are especially adept at developing elaborate ruses to convince ourselves we are content. For example, when I found out I was going to be unemployed, almost immediately a job opportunity surfaced on the horizon. Feeling both rejected and panicky, I started to morph myself into what the job required. Beware the red herrings, for they are tests to your resolve. This process of discernment is a powerful tool in the personal development arsenal. A firm but gentle no can be a path to yes.
De-Clutter.
A powerful physical manifestation of your newfound ability to say no, is the ability to purge your belongings. A wonderful way to usher in a new spiritual sensibility is to shed possessions that no longer have a home with you, creating literal room for something new to enter your life. Author Sonia Choquette says that clutter distracts you from your intuition.
Start
tuning into
yourself.
Listening to yourself is harder than you think. Sometimes a two by four fells us into paying attention-that's happened to me more than a few times! Sometimes a whisper grabs our attention. As Dorothy said in the Wizard of Oz, "You don't need to be helped any longer. You've always had the power." Many teachings believe you have all the answers inside of you, if you can turn down the static and find the right frequency your heart is broadcasting on. Attraction
