IF YOU COULD SEE WHAT I SEE
THE TENETS OF NOVUS SPIRITUS

By Sylvia Browne

Tenet XII The body is a living temple unto God, wherein we worship the spark of the Divine.
Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed, and other religious leaders have all stated that the body is a temple. At Novus Spiritus, we believe that the body houses the soul, and what seems to be so temporary and fragile is probably one of the biggest miracles that God has created. People who don’t believe in God need only look at this wonderful creation that comes from a single egg and sperm and becomes this perfect machine (as it were).

...Even if science discovers how to clone the human body, they’ll only be copying what’s already been created by God. Personally, I’m not thrilled about the cloning aspect, but I know that if God doesn’t want it, it will fail. It almost seems as if humankind wants to be God, not be part of Him/Her. And as for stem-cell research, I favor it, but why not use the umbilical cords? There are certainly enough of them without harvesting embryos.

...Anyway, we should honor and care for this temple we live in because life is a miracle. Yet when we become addicted to harmful substances (which seems to be an astronomically growing problem), we defile our temple. Now there are probably as many reasons for addiction as there are substances to be addicted to. It can strike anywhere, and we all probably know someone who has such a problem. In fact, we all have some kind of addiction ourselves—for example, mine is coffee, which I’ve had to cut down on (too much acid—damn!); other people find themselves continually craving chocolate or soda. These are the “lesser addictions,” which I’ll address in a bit. Right now I’d like to tackle the really lethal addictions: those related to alcohol and drugs.

...Substance abuse used to be hushed up among the upper crust and the rich and famous, but even that eventually became news—especially now that we hear so much about celebrities and their addictions. Rush Limbaugh; Nick Nolte; Bobby Brown; Whitney Houston; Courtney Love; Robert Downey, Jr.; and others have generated headlines in recent years, and that was just the tip of the iceberg. Even Ray Charles, who was a wonderful talent, was bedeviled by heroin—but fortunately was able to kick the habit long before he died. Sadly, the same cannot be said for John Belushi, River Phoenix, Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe, Jerry Garcia, Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Chris Farley, or Elvis Presley . . . and the list goes on.

...We’re in the process of making our way through this world, and if we don’t face life full on, we’ll just have to come back and repeat the whole process. Whether people realize it or not, addiction to alcohol and drugs is a type of subliminal suicide. I know that life isn’t easy, but it can’t be any harder than having the proverbial monkey on your back as you wait for that next drink or fix.

...Peer pressure is very strong, especially among our youth. Some of us remember when beer was the only choice now we have drugs on the street that we can’t even pronounce. But it’s not just kids who are in danger. I talk to men and women every day who are hooked on painkillers, uppers, downers, and on and on it goes. And I know about this silent, creeping cancer firsthand because my mother was a prescription-drug addict (and I’m not blaming her doctors for this, since she went “doctor shopping”). Yet I do thank God for the one good thing I got out of this: I hate drugs and can’t drink!

...Think of it this way—why would anyone want to live in a filthy house with mold and scum? Yet that’s essentially how many of us treat our temples. As my grandmother used to say, you can be poor, but you don’t have to be dirty. And our outward living conditions do tend to be an example of what’s going on inside.
