The 'Little Earth' Factor

By Donna Lyon Rhose

I've often thought that, if there really are space aliens observing us, and if the aliens were truly wise, they would most likely not save us. They would not save any of us because we would have to prove worth saving; and in order to do that, we would really have to save ourselves; lest in these space brethren saving us we only regenerate to put the Earth back into the same state as we have it in today. It is a bed we ourselves have made, after all; and we would need to sleep in it whether or not we awoke.

Or, is that the truth of it?

There could be other reasons for saving us... or at least a portion of us. Perhaps  the aliens might save some of us out of curiosity or sympathy... or to put some of us in an elaborate zoo... Besides, technological superiority does not necessarily confer any real wisdom, as we as a species can certainly attest.

However we may protest, our species is a part of this planet. No matter what, we are tied to Her fate, whether or not we may survive. I could not see implanting us elsewhere, at least at this point of development, as we still belong to the system of the Earth – to Gaia.

Which brings me back to whether a “wise” group of aliens would make any attempt to save us? I think the answer really depends on whether or not there is an interest in saving Gaia Herself.

If nothing else, I would think that Gaia is concerned whether or not we survive. It is our capabilities and possibilities that make us important rather than what we have or have not done as a species. And it is actually what we are that may bear the most weight on Her mind in the end.

We have the capability to care beyond our individual persons or family group. We are capable of caring about other species as well as human strangers and to act upon that caring. We are capable of helping other species in need, even when that species would have a natural proclivity to cause humans harm. It is our ability to project beyond our own personal sphere of being that has allowed for this capability to arise. It is an evolvement that is still in its process.

As a species, we have a true innate desire to communicate and befriend other species, seeking to understand and interrelate with them. We often take other species into our homes for the sole desire of their friendship, companionship and love. There is as much desire in many humans to understand the natural world as to control it as we seek to find ways of working within nature. This, too, is in an evolutionary process.
