volunteer fair will be held on February
9 and 10 at the Phoenix and Dragon
bookstore in Sandy Springs. This
event was organized after the store's
owner, Candace Apple, and her employees
were reviewing the mission statement
of the store in light of recent
world events. “We have always
strived to create an environment
that nurtures the human spirit,
and during this time we realize
that people need each other more
than ever. If we can help join people
together for the common good, then
we all benefit.” Included in
the weekend will be two keynote
presentations: the first from the
University of Human Goodness,
entitled “Service - the
Path to Personal Transformation.”
Members of the University of Human
Goodness have been utilizing service
as a path for personal transformation
for fifteen years. They will be
speaking about how the simple act
of serving another can open pathways
to the soul and bring joy into our
lives. The second address is “Ethics
of Volunteering”, presented
by a representative from Hands on
Atlanta on the importance of volunteering
ethically and effectively. Hands
on Atlanta is a nonprofit organization
that helps individuals, families,
and corporate and community groups
find flexible volunteer opportunities
at more than 400 service organizations
and schools. The organization is
now more than 25,000 volunteers
strong, building community and meeting
critical needs in schools, parks,
senior homes, food banks, pet shelters,
low income neighborhoods, and more.
During the fair, information tables
staffed with representatives from
non-profit groups will be set up
throughout the Phoenix and Dragon.
