Romance
By
Neil Tepper
I
approached the first tee with all the confidence
of a school boy fumbling with a flower he picked
for the pretty girl in the second row. Partly
intimidated and hugely excited about the prospect
of doing something fun... and scary.
For
me, on that sunny August morning, the fun part
was to play a round of golf and enjoy the camaraderie
of our foursome. The scary part was the anxiety
I felt about how I would 'perform',
since I hadn't played golf in years.
Amazingly,
however, as I reached into my bag of borrowed
clubs at the first tee, I felt myself smiling.
All of a sudden, my attention shifted from the
challenge at hand to the context of the moment.
Here I was, standing on a swath of green, nestled
in a valley of rolling hills in the Blue Ridge
Mountains of Virginia, the early light painting
the scene in gold. Alive! in Nature's beauty.
It was my heart that was smiling. And, as the
round unfolded, I found that despite my duffed
drives, errant fairway wood shots and gutless
putts, I was in love, - in romance - with the
experience. My score became incidental (well,
okay, the ego part of me needs, now, to say
that I didn't shoot too badly that day. There,
are you happy, Ego?).
That
golf outing made me consider whether it was
possible to bring that feeling of romance to
my everyday life, where a moment would be so
full (soulful?) of sensory and emotional richness
that it was about 'being' the experience,
not 'doing' it.
I
thought of the world's greatest romantics:
children. Ever watch kids playing? Gosh, they
don't even need another person to have a
ball. Chasing leaves across the lawn, pretending
they're an airplane zooming in for a landing,
talking to an imaginary friend. Kids don't
go into their heads for 'confirmations'
or 'evaluations' or any such judgments.
No, they go right to feeling and being in the
ENERGY. In feeling the energy, they are in love
with the moment. Romantic, indeed.
