Deborah
Anapol: Sexual Shamanism
and
the Sacred Union of Opposites
Interview
by Carl McColman
Deborah
Anapol is a seminar leader, public speaker,
writer, and community organizer, who has been
instrumental in facilitating both personal
and cultural transformation in the areas of
love and sexuality for the past two decades.
Her unique gift enables people to reclaim
their sexual innocence and expand the boundaries
of their hearts.
Carl:
What is sexual shamanism?
Deborah:
The word 'shaman' came from Siberia
but has come to be used cross culturally to
describe people who act in several nonordinary
capacities for their tribes. Shamans use sound
and vibration to alter consciousness and also
know how to use sexual energy to enhance healing
and potency. So in a way, sexual shamanism
is redundant. But where many shamanic practices
involve the use of plant medicines to create
an altered state where we can experience our
wholeness, I prefer teaching people how to
work directly with their sexual energy
and the breath to expand consciousness.
Cultivating
your sexual energy is free, legal, and has
a very positive effect on the body. It enhances
the immune system and slows the aging process.
Sexual shamanism puts the responsibility and
the technology for healing back into your
own hands, rather than relying on some external
power, whether it be that of the shaman, the
plant medicine, or the modern medical professional.
Carl:
When I think of shamanism, I think of healing
work. Does sexual shamanism foster healing?
Why and How?
Deborah:
Yes, sexual shamanism means both using
our sexual energy for healing and also healing
the wounds to our sexual selves. In the shamanic
view, disease occurs when through a self destructive
urge, hate or avoidance, some parts of the
body become unable to communicate with the
rest. They would be out of vibrational synchronization.
If they could get back in sync, this recognition
would enable the illness of the part to be
healed. The whole body would then be able
to communicate in vibrational resonance with
the ill part. This is how healing occurs.
Another way to say this would be to say that
love heals.
Carl:
What are the most common problems men and
women encounter in their quest for conscious
loving? What's the best strategy for overcoming
those problems?
Deborah:
Most of us raised in this culture have
been taught in many ways to reject the natural
expression of our own sexuality. In addition,
most of us have been taught to fear and mistrust
the opposite sex. To make matters worse, we've
been taught the source of love is outside
of us, that we have to somehow find and hang
on to the Prince or Princess who can make
us whole. On top of all that, we have absorbed
the belief that if it doesn't work, someone
is to blame. We have many other erroneous
and dysfunctional beliefs about love andsex,
which we mistake for the truth and it all
adds up to a recipe for disaster.
