The
Wolf Myths: The Beginning
As
communicated by Wolf Juno to Julia Griffin
In
the first Beginning, there was only the
great emptiness or Void. The first stars
flickered intermittently in the long,
dark heavens. All was without shape or
form. The Great Force of the Universe
made shapes of the stars and breathed
life into them. These were the constellations
that lit the sky. The spirits of Man and
Wolf first lived here, in the constellations,
for many seasons and turnings of the sky.
For
eons, the constellations lit the Universe,
and nothing changed. At last, the Great
Force of the Universe spoke the first
words. The whole universe changed. The
clouds of bright stardust solidified,
and the planets came into existence. The
elements separated from the clouds. Spirits
were sent to occupy the elements, and,
from these life on earth began.
The
earth lay rich and green with waters that
were blue and clear. She shone jewel-like
among the planets, and Wolf and Man watched
her from their place in the stars. At
last, they could resist no more and ran
excitedly down the starpath to earth.
Man
and Wolf chased one another around the
Earth, splashing through oceans and running
through great forests. They drank from
the streams and ate the green plants,
feeling the new energy of the earth. Man
and Wolf thanked the earth spirits for
the food and water. They lay on the ground
and marveled at Earth's beauty.
Only
one day passed as Wolf and Man chased
over the earth. Night came at last, and
Wolf and Man watched the sky darken. They
saw their empty place in the Heavens and
became lonely for the sky, with its darkness
and stars.
Let
us go back to our place in the Heavens,
Wolf said to Man. And Man agreed, for
he was suddenly saddened by the sky.
When
they returned to their place in the stars,
Wolf and Man were happy to be back. They
could not be content because they had
fallen in love with earth. They longed
for the earth, but belonged to the sky.
The Great Force of the Universe felt their
thoughts and spoke, sending their energy
to earth. These thoughts of the constellations
became the new creatures on earth. These
creatures were young like the earth. They
possessed the energy of the stars and
needed little food or water, although
they were heavier and denser than their
star images. Soon earth became filled
with likenesses of all of the Star creatures,
and this cycle began.
Although
Man and Wolf were happy in their place
in the heavens, they began to again long
for Earth. One night, they saw their counterparts,
Wolf and Man on Earth, asleep, and they
imagined what it was to be them. Wolf
and Man, far away in the stars, imagined
themselves frolicking on earth, exploring
new forests, hunting together as they
had in Heaven.
Wolf
and Man on Earth were surprised the next
morning because their sleep had been full
of pictures of running together on earth,
of hunting and exploring through the forest.
Always before, their sleep had been short
and dark without color or pictures. Wolf
and Man on Earth remembered the star pictures
of their sleep. They called it dreaming.
This was the second gift of the stars.
