The
blow came toward my mouth
and the glass of water I had
been drinking from fell with
a thud to the floor. Not paying
attention yet to the gash
and the wet feeling of blood
that began to flow from inside
my lip, I bent to pick it
up. The impact of the fist
that hurled the glass to the
floor had busted my lip open.
As I stood holding the glass
in one hand I raised the other
to the dull pain in my mouth
and looked down at it. Blood
covered my fingers.
All
I remember were anger and
nasty words, my countering
pleas uttered through the
wound in my lips, blood still
leaking from it. Confrontations
between my abusive boyfriend
and I surfaced, simmered,
and faded throughout our two-year
relationship. This time, the
end had come. He ranted. At
times like this, he would
grow scarily controlling,
and I made a bluff to leave
the apartment. I expected
the demeaning words, the word
“b---”, the insults,
the feeling of being punished
for trying to address things
with him that he didn't want
to hear. Trying to remain
calm, I left with him shouting
further insults at me to my
back. It was the last time
we would ever exchange words.
Over
one year ago, I left an abusive
relationship. It confronted
me with the challenging responsibility
and enlightenment of gaining
control over my own life.
Abuse breaks a person down,
and trying to pick up broken
pieces is even harder.
