Designing Your Own Destiny
a review by Marie-Claire Wilson

“Design Your Destiny: Shape Your Future in 12 Easy Steps” is not only a simple and elegantly written book, but it's also a guide for everyone whose hopes for a better future are asleep in them. It's a guide about how to affect our own destiny, and make it better. The author, Guy Finley, outlines this process in a few practical and workable steps, which he calls the twelve fundamental keys to a more dynamic and positive destiny:

1. Get one thing done

2. Take the conscious risk

3. Cancel self-wrecking resentments

4. Step out of the rush

5. Refuse to be self-compromising

6. Take the step that you're sure you can't

7. Break out of the blame game

8. Erase those fearful feelings

9. Release and relax yourself

10. Stop the secret self-sabotage

11. Get quiet

12. Five things to practice to gain complete freedom from stress

The author shows us how to figure out what fears, hidden or open, are causing blocks in our life, trapping us or holding us back. Finley gives us guidelines on how to become free from fear and shed its negative effects. That helps us to become free to move forward. The majority of people are not truly happy with their lives or their jobs, and yet, there is a way to find happiness. It takes a little courage to look inside of ourselves and face the truth head on. Shedding our fears lends us that courage.

Another important thing to do when designing our own destiny is not to listen to other people who are going to try and tell us how to run our lives. Especially don't listen to those who might tell us that we can't accomplish what we are setting out to do. If we stop and listen to all the critics, we won't be able to go forward. We'll get caught up in trying (and of course, failing) to please everyone else, losing focus on our goal. Then, we'll spend all of our time sitting around complaining and making up excuses why we can't succeed.

When we begin to take an honest look inside, to ask ourselves what it is that we truly want, what it is we must do to become happy, we form goals. We have to be able to create goals and then visualize these goals vividly. Focusing on these goals requires eliminating all dread, anger, hate, and frustration regarding the past. Those ghosts that haunt us only detract us from our true purpose. Concentrating on the present leads us to the future.

So, the more we go inside of ourselves and seek what it is we really want, the more we see how we can give more meaning to our lives, and how much it matters what goes on inside of us. We begin to tap into the true wealth that is found deep within our own souls. We will find the courage to shed our fears, find the imagination to visualize our goals in detail, and find the inspiration to create the lives that we were meant to live.

Living from our souls will bring us true happiness. This makes good sense. Finley points out how we learn from our mistakes and the pain of the past. This introspection is necessary. Nothing brings home a point better than the lessons we learn first hand. There is a joke that tells us, “experience is what enables us to recognize a mistake when we make it again.” Now, we can even go so far as to recognize the path that leads to those mistakes, so better to redirect ourselves toward our goals.

Every day, we are subject to habitual behaviors that demonstrate an ignorance of the natural laws that show that every little thing we do contributes to our destiny. Thus, we create a lot of our own misery. We often even create the very chains that bind us, the prisons of our lives, the very things that keep us from what we want, from happiness. Of course, we are usually doing this unconsciously; but we are doing it by acting out of our beliefs, prejudices, fears, greed, and ignorance of the cosmic laws, including the laws of karma. Only we can break ourselves free from these self-made chains. It's not circumstances that rule our lives, it's how we live it from the inside. When we feel that freedom, we see better the ways to create circumstances and to unveil otherwise unrecognized opportunities.

We have the free choice to transform our failures into successes, to become masters of our souls instead of being slaves to circumstance, and to transform what is unhappy about our lives into contentment and joy. Then, we are truly designing our destiny. Design Your Destiny is a great book for creating the blueprint with clear instructions for all those who want to truly be in charge of their own destiny.
