One of the principles of Radical Forgiveness is that we only get upset with others when they resonate in us what we have denied, disowned and repressed about ourselves: our shadows. In fact, rather than confront it in ourselves and heal it there, we subconsciously attract into our lives someone who will mirror that for us so we can accept it in ourselves. If we don’t see it as an opportunity to heal, we then compound the problem by projecting our shadow onto them and vilifying them.

This is just as true for countries as for individuals. America is a great example. America has a shadow side that it refuses to confront or even look at. The wounds to the soul of America are deep and painful, but we sweep them all under the carpet. Then we project our guilt and self hatred onto other people and label them as evil. Sound familiar?

This is the classic projection mechanism. Saddam Hussein is a perfect scapegoat. Look at everything about Saddam that America gets so outraged and self-righteous about, and you will find its counterpart in the American shadow. They are the very things that America must heal if it is to survive psychologically and spiritually - and Saddam is mirroring it all perfectly and is forcing us to look at it over and over again - until we do.
