Ana: What is the philosophy of Kundalini Yoga?

Ravi Singh: Historically, Kundalini Yoga is the confluence of three streams: The Sant Tradition which is following in the footsteps of great masters, The Bhakti Tradition, which is ecstatic devotional practices, and the Nath Tradition which is the sophisticated technology of how energy moves in the body and psyche. The philosophical underpinning of Kundalini Yoga can be expressed in two little words: Keep Up! Each exercise is our life in embryo. How we choose to participate in an exercise is symptomatic of how we live our life. They say it takes money to make money. Likewise it takes spirit to have Spirit be in evidence in our lives. Spirit is positive motivation and the feeling that anything is possible. It's the attitude that the end is endless and that each exercise in class or in life is the never-ending exercise. In Kundalini Yoga we don’t want to do more than we're ready for but we want to be willing to do more than we thought we could.

Ana: What is a typical Kundalini Yoga class like?

Ravi Singh: Normally we start with some kind of breathing exercise then we do some spinal warm-ups and some stretching. Then we do a specific sequence called a Kriya. Each sequence is like a poem which has a literal meaning, a symbolic meaning, and a music and rhythm all its own. One Kriya might focus on mastering one’s moods, or working through creative blocks, or developing will-power. You can conceivably come to class for a year and never do the same class twice.

After doing a set we relax on our backs for a few minutes. Then we end class with a meditation or chant. Most classes are ninety minutes. Kundalini Yoga is very user-friendly. If you can breathe you can do it. We give ways to modify every exercise so everyone can always participate.

Ana: I understand you've been doing regional Teachers' Training courses?

Ravi Singh: Yes. I believe the highest vocation is to use one's gift to heal, uplift, and inspire. Kundalini Yoga is the perfect venue to make a difference in people's lives. The Universe is looking for good people to help turn the tide of insanity and share tools for successful living.

Ravi Singh will be offering a week long Teachers' Training course at the Yoga Source in Snellville, GA., February 8th thru 15th. He's also offering an evening workshop Thursday December 19th.
