Kundalini - The Art and Science of Spirit Rising by Ana Brett With over 26 years of teaching and studying Kundalini Yoga, Ravi Singh remains fresh in his quest to keep innovating - with new methods, approaches, depth and insight. Cited as the Teachers' Teacher, Ravi has personally trained more than 300 practicing Kundalini Yoga Teachers, helped found centers in New York, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, et al, and authored twenty videos and books. His clients have included notables such as Lou Reed, The Red Hot Chile Peppers, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Olympic Athletes. His approach is powerful, poetic, meditative, moving, and fun. I take Singh's Kundalini Yoga classes at least four times per week. I was stuck in a non-functional relationship and my life felt purposeless. I knew I needed to do something different. Kundalini yoga got everything moving. By strengthening my navel chakra I could take more control of my life instead of just being a passive participant. Within four months everything had turned around. I've studied ballet and yoga since I've been a teenager. I felt that all these systems overly emphasized the external, so much so that it created tension in my body. What helped my transformation was the freeing up of that tension. Kundalini, in my experience, works from the inside out. It's like a moving meditation. Kundalini was a very freeing experience. Ana: What is Kundalini? Ravi Singh: Kundalini, according to the ancient yogis, is the energy of the Universe in us - that that leads us from the finite to the Infinite. A scientist might call it the basic bio-energy of our being, a Baptist, the Holy Ghost, a psychologist, the motivating force within us, an anthropologist, the universal archetype in the growth of the psyche. The poet Dylan Thomas in effect called it, the force that through the green fuse drives the flower. However you care to define it, Kundalini empowers us to be humanly human and divinely inspired, and to shine, prosper, and excel in all things. Thus, through whatever means, and under whatever label, Kundalini is the common denominator for all forms of self-healing, inspiration, and transformation. Ana: What is Kundalini Yoga? Ravi Singh: Kundalini Yoga is the jewel in the crown of yoga systems. It combines breathing, movement, stretching, meditation, sound as a transformative tool, and the science of sequence. Traditionally only the most deserving aspirants were instructed in this system. In fact, even today in India, Kundalini Yoga is still a secret science. It was brought to the West in 1969 by Yogi Bhajan who felt that secret practices are no longer indicated and that anything which can help people heal their lives should be readily available.
