Getting Grounded

By Lynette Suzanne

What is being grounded? Why would you want to be grounded? How in the world do you get grounded?

Once many years ago, I moved into an old farmhouse. It was a charming place, however, it had no air conditioning and it was the middle of August in Georgia. We decided we needed to at least install a window unit to help us stay cool. We got the air conditioning unit, but upon inspection of the wiring for the home discovered we were going to need some assistance with the installation. We hired an electrician who came to the home and began working to install the air conditioning unit in the upstairs bedroom. After a short time, the electrician came to me and said, “ma’am, this house isn’t properly grounded!” He went on to explain that if we had installed the window unit (never mind the washer/dryer, microwave, etc.) we would have overloaded the system. We were about to create a very unsafe situation that could have resulted in burning the whole house down! We learned the importance of having your home properly grounded.

It is just as important for us to ground ourselves as it is for us to have our homes and other structures grounded. By grounding ourselves we create safety and a sense of security in our lives. If we are grounded we can handle the energy that we run through our lives and channel overcharged energies safely out of our space. Grounding gives a way to release these charged energies safely. Being grounded means we feel safe, secure, and a sense of belonging here. Sometimes our grounding can get damaged or uprooted. We lose a job; move to a new community where we don’t know anyone; lose a spouse or other important people; get a frightening health report; get divorced; get married; have children. Even less disruptive changes in our lives can un-ground us and cause us to feel insecure. In these instances we may find we need to create a new grounding for lives, new ways to be grounded. We may need to create new friends, new jobs, new homes, and new routines. Our old ways of belonging and feeling safe in the world may not work anymore. If you’ve been grounding in the same way for a long time and then suddenly it’s gone, it may be very challenging indeed to release that old grounding that is no longer there and allow a new way of grounding to emerge. By being kind to yourself and acknowledging that this is a time of transition you help allow that creative process to take place as you naturally, through grace, start re-grounding yourself again.

When our electrician set about updating the electrical system and bringing the grounding up to date in the home, I watched him drive a copper stake deep into the earth and connect wires from the house up to that stake. Then, the excess energy could be safely grounded into the earth. Take a look at how you are grounding yourself right now. Examine your basis of grounding and determine if it is safe and stable. You may be grounding through your relationships, job, or school or through a group or your community, or your habits and routines. If any of these are no longer working for you, create a new way to be grounded.

Try this: Take 10 minutes, sitting quietly in a chair with both feet flat on the floor. Let your hands rest with your palms up in your lap. Relax your shoulders. Relax your jaw. Go to your mind’s eye and use it to imagine yourself sitting right where you are. Now imagine a cord that’s long enough to reach all the way down to the center of the earth. Plug one end into the center of the earth. Plug the other end into the base of your spine. Now imagine any charged energy you’re experiencing in your body and in your life being drawn out of your space by that grounding cord you’ve created. Ground out any energy such as fear or judgment that is NOT your own energy. Allow the grounding cord to do the work. Then, once you’ve cleared some room, invite your own energy back. Fill yourself up with your own wonderful, unique blend of you! Fill back up with your sense of humor, your enthusiasm, your creativity and all the wonderful things that make up YOU!
