QUESTIONABLE INTEGRITY

Years ago, we did a center spread on “A Course in Miracles”, and Marianne Williamson. I remember my HOT BUTTON being pushed when I saw her on the Larry King show, and she didn't make it clear that she neither wrote nor channeled this book. I thought she should have told the story of how the course came about. How two professional people, Helen Schucman, and William Thetford became involved and how their lives were changed. I thought she missed a great opportunity to give credability to channeled information. In retrospect, maybe Ms. Williamson was right to focus on the information and to expose the book and the teachings rather than to give a lesson on channeling. I believe she's done a great job with her books, and her seminar/ workshops as she bases her work on the “Course”, as she understands it's meaning.

HOW IT CAME

A Course in Miracles began with a sudden decision of two people to join in a common goal. Helen Schucman and William Thetford, Professors of Medical Psychology at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. This story shows that with God all things are possible.

A SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT

Helen Schucman was the one who received the material and described herself at the time (back in 1977) as a Psychologist, Educator, conservative in theory and atheistic in belief. Working in a prestigious and highly academic setting, when something (the Channeling) happened that could never have been predicted. The other person that was involved was her friend and the Head of her Department, Bill Thetford, who recently announced he was tired of the angry and aggressive feelings his attitudes reflected. They both agreed, “There must be a better way”. Three months of visions and symbolic dreaming occurred before the actual writings came through. During that time Helen said she had grown more accustomed to the “Unexpected”, but she was still very surprised when she wrote, this is “A course in Miracles”. This was her introduction to the “VOICE”. Although it made no sound, it did give her a rapid inner dictation, which she took down in shorthand. Bill and Helen collaborated daily on this Special Assignment. Helen would read to him what the voice “Said” and he would type her dictation.
